The store was founded on Spring Street in 1983, when Maurice and Lynn de La Valette, who were working in the fashion industry in New York, decided to concentrate their talents on their own specialty clothing store. Both have a keen eye for quality European made goods, as Maurice was the G.M.M, vice-President and buyer for the French Furriers, Revillon and Lynn was the head of her department and a buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue.
