ProAm Tennis is owned and managed by Roddy Cantey – the only United States Racquet Stringers Association (USRSA) certified Master Racquet Technician (MRT) in the Naples/Ft. Meyers area. Cantey is also a USPTA certified tennis teaching professional. (Just what is an MRT? Please visit the USRSA web site at http://www.usrsa.com/ ). He is also a string tester and on the Advisory Staff with the USRSA

Tennis has always been a passion of Cantey’s. Starting at the age of 5, he quickly developed into a top notch junior player, being nationally ranked from the time he was 12 years old until he was 18. He was chosen to demonstrate proper stroke and technique in New York during the US Open when he was 14.

He was the #1 singles and doubles player on his high school team for three years. As captain, he led that team to 3 consecutive South Carolina 4A state titles, recording a record of 59-1. During his senior year, Cantey won the high school individual state championship and was named South Carolina’s Mr. Tennis.

Later, at Penn State University, Cantey again stood out as a singles and doubles player. During his senior year at Penn State, he again served as captain, led his team at #1 singles and doubles, and made it to the semi-finals of the Big-10 individual tournament. He was awarded Penn State’s “Iron Man” award his junior year and the “Holmes Cathrall Coaches Award” his senior year. Unfortunately, a serious knee injury during his senior year at Penn State prevented Cantey from continuing his competitive career.

Beyond his athletic ability, Cantey has also won numerous sportsmanship awards. He was named sportsman of the year during the Big-10 final banquet his senior year. He is the only junior player in history to win the sportsmanship award in the Southern Section Closed Tournament 14s, 16s, and 18s. His family was named the tennis “Family of the Year” in South Carolina in 1998
