Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Audubon’s Mission: Our goal is to conserve and rebuild nature’s ecosystems. Our concentration is on the habitat of birds and other wildlife. We work daily for the benefit of humanity and the biological diversity of the earth.
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is set on about 13,000 acres in the heart of the South Florida’s Corkscrew Watershed in the Western Everglades. Composed primarily of wetlands, our setting includes the world’s largest surviving virgin bald cypress forest (approximately 700 acres). This habitat is the site of the country’s largest nesting colony of Federally Endangered Wood Storks. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary also provides important habitat for numerous other Federal and State listed species, including the Florida Panther, American Alligator, Gopher Tortoise, Florida Sandhill Crane, Limpkin, Roseate Spoonbill, Snowy Egret, Tricolored Heron, White Ibis, Big Cypress Fox Squirrel and the Florida Black Bear. Several rare plants are also in evidence, including the Ghost Orchid.
