Newport Vineyards

Newport Vineyards was originally planted in 1977 on a hill overlooking Rhode Island Sound with the goal of producing fine table wines and as a way of preserving beautiful agricultural land from rapid development.

The grapes grown in our vineyards are uniquely suited to the soil and climatic conditions that exist along our rugged Rhode Island coast. In particular, the Vidal and Seyval Grape varieties that grow in abundance in our vineyards have adapted well to the long growing season and the intermittent fog that are part of our Newport summers.

Newport Vineyards’ 50 acres of premiere vines are centrally situated on Aquidneck Island, approximately 2 miles from the ocean. Our vineyards are close enough to the water for protection against October frosts, yet far enough away to avoid the fog and benefit from the thermal heat off the land.

The elevation is about 175 feet, one of the highest sites on the island. We are also blessed with a constant breeze, which keeps the vines dry and protected from fungal diseases and heavy frost. The site has some of the richest soil on the east coast: a deep, silty loam which drains moderately well, yet retains enough moisture to resist the need for irrigation during the summer months. Our new Nunes Farm site is a fourth generation family farm which has drain tiles down every row of grapes which rid the field of excess water and encourage deep root penetration, resulting in more full-bodied, complex wines.

Since the initial plantings of Seyval and Vidal, we have also added Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Landot Noir. We have also just planted an additional 20 acres of prime vineyard land adjacent to the Winery.

Our family run Winery is one of the most modern in the East and produces a line of fine premium table wines from our own grapes and from fruit brought in from nearby vineyards. Each of our wines is styled to compliment a broad range of tastes from the soft fruitiness of our Vidal Blanc to the crisp dryness of our Chardonnay.

Many of our wines have been awarded medals of excellence at prestigious international wine competitions. We invite you to try our wonderful wines .in the relaxed atmosphere of our Tasting Room on your next visit to Rhode Island.
