The Jacob Purdy House was used as General George Washington’s headquarters in 1778 and possibly in 1776 during the Battle of White Plains of the American Revolutionary War. Originally constructed prior to 1730, in the 1960s it was repaired and restored, and in 1973 the structure was moved to its present location.

Percy Grainger was born in Brighton, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. His father John Harry Grainger was a successful and talented architect who grew up in France and was educated in a monastery school in Yvetot. He emigrated from London, England in 1876. John’s business partner and best friend was David Mitchell, the father of Nellie Melba.
